How the rating works

Every ranked municipio gets one overall score from 0 to 10, built from the same open-data formula. Recommended places get a +0.25 boost on the overall grade.

Pillars

Most pillars are peer-relative within the ranked cohort. Internet uses absolute fibre scores when verified. Access includes hospital, airport, Renfe and coach. A missing pillar counts as 0 in the overall grade.

  • Future (30%)

Population change, unemployment trend, age, foreign share and housing price trend.

  • Affordability (10%)

Housing €/m² and cost-of-living index vs national average (lower is better).

  • Access (15%)

Drive time to hospital and airport (shorter is better). Renfe and coach: own stop (within ~5 km) scores highest; within 20 km is near; beyond 20 km the grade falls with each extra kilometre. Missing links within Access are omitted from that blend.

  • Climate (10%)

Places with plenty of sun without scorching summer heat score higher.

  • Internet (6%)

Fibre coverage, speed tier and 5G availability from SETELECO. Omitted when fibre data is not verified.

  • Services (6%)

Share of 11 everyday services present when amenity data is attached: grocery, pharmacy, health centre, school, bank, ATM, post office, police, bar/café, restaurant, sports. Omitted from the grade when amenities are not verified.

  • Community (10%)

Spanish vs foreign mix on the padrón (absolute formula). Places with a noticeable English-speaking community get a small boost. The community metric favours places with more than 1,000 people.

  • Tax (6%)

Rural IRPF incentives relative to peers.

  • Beauty (7%)

Natura 2000 is the EU’s network of protected nature sites (habitats and birds) — we score how much of the municipal area overlaps a site and how close the nearest site is (farmland alone does not count). Founding year is the earliest plausible settlement / written-record year we can verify; older places score higher. Missing years are omitted from that part of the blend.

Data coverage

Ranked municipios use verified open data (INE, SEPE, SETELECO, Renfe stations, coach terminals, etc.). Provisional places stay out of public rankings until core sources attach. We never label invented employment or budgets as SEPE or Gobierto.

If a signal is missing or only estimated, we show that clearly and treat it as 0 for scoring so it pulls the grade down like a zero score.

What it is not

Not a popularity vote, not legal or financial advice, and not a “best beach” list. Always verify with town halls and official agencies.
